Both TA-Luft [1] and DIN EN ISO 15848-1 [2] [3] aim to mitigate or reduce fugitive emissions which are harmful to the environment and human health. TA-Luft is a comprehensive German regulation which specifies binding technical requirements for classified installations in accordance with the 4th Federal Emmission Control Act. EN ISO 15848-1 [2] [3] is an international standard which provides users with evaluation criteria for classifying valves (isolation and control devices), to enable different designs or brands to be compared. Although compliance with the requirements of TA-Luft is considered to be proof of a sealing system’s quality –not just in Germany but in many other countries too – EN ISO 15848-1 [2] [3] is playing an increasingly important role in the chemical, petrochemical and process industries.

Operational Behaviour of Safety Valves with Constant Superimposed Backpressure

When selecting spring loaded safety valves, an accurate knowledge and consideration of the specific operating conditions are vital to ensure that these devices work reliably. As optimal resource use becomes an increasingly relevant criterion, plant owners focus particular attention on components that can be depended on absolutely – even at their physical limits. In the design of a safety valve, the existence of a backpressure must be considered in addition to the usual parameters for dimensioning. In this present report, the function of a safety valve is intended to be shown when a constant superimposed backpressure is present in the discharge and thus acts against the direction of opening of the safety valve.

Water hammer in valves – solutions to improve stability

Very strong pressure pulses or surges, also referred to as water hammer, often occur in fluid-conducting pipes. The stresses on the pipes, valves and apparatus can be so high that the equipment concerned is damaged – or in extreme cases actually bursts. Before effective measures can be taken to combat this problem, it is important to analyse exactly which kind of water hammer is involved and what causes it. No matter how carefully a facility is planned and constructed, the risk of pressure surges cannot always be completely ruled out, particularly if the plant is modified or extended or the operating mode changes frequently. If the plant components are designed with sufficient stability, half the battle is won.

Back pressure safety valves

When dimensioning and selecting safety valves for vessels and installations, it is important that this fitting should not be considered as being separate from its supply and blow-off pipes. The pressure and flow situation in neighbouring pipes and installation components may have an appreciable adverse influence on the functioning of safety valves. The resulting reduction of the mass flow leads to a rise in pressure. In extreme cases, unstable functioning behaviour in the form of flutter and hammering may lead to the valve becoming torn away. An accurate knowledge of the behaviour of safety valves and of the admissible limits in relation to back pressure, is a condition of avoiding the problems described. Various regulations [1,2,3] either specify the admissible back pressure, or refer to the manufacturers of the safety valves.
